Denon DA 305, turntable tonearm including Audio Technica cable. Year: 1973. Vintage, collector’s item.

Description

The Denon DA-305 was a 10-inch static-balanced universal S-shaped tonearm, complete with an adjustable tonearm rod. This design was in keeping with the technical tradition of the Japanese manufacturer Denon, which in those years was developing extremely robust and precise solutions for the analogue playback sector, with a particular focus on mechanical stability and operational longevity.

The model retained the performance and durability of the renowned DA-302, DA-303 and DA-304 broadcast tonearms, which were adopted by the Japanese public broadcaster NHK and numerous other commercial broadcasters. This technical lineage underscored its professional character and design philosophy geared towards maximum long-term reliability.

The tonearm is fitted with an Audio Technica phono cable, featuring gold-plated terminals, RCA connectors and a ground fork at one end, and a standard 5-pin connector at the other. This configuration reflected the quality standards of the era and helped to preserve the integrity of the analogue signal over time.

To maintain high sensitivity and reliability over a long period, two miniature bearings were used for the horizontal rotating shaft, protected by a double housing. This mechanical solution reduced wear and allowed the rotation system to maintain considerable precision even after long periods of operation.

Furthermore, to stabilise the friction of the upper and lower rotating parts, an angular contact bearing with minimal friction variation and a hardened pin with a precision polished finish were employed. The bearing assembly was protected by a special elastic housing that made it extremely resistant to external vibrations and shocks, a feature that contributed to the overall quality of the design.

A direct micrometric reading was adopted for the stylus pressure adjustment method. The DA-305 was designed to display the stylus pressure scale, which could be observed at two points depending on the compatible cartridges. The black scale on the side of the tonearm mount was used for cartridges weighing up to 9.5 g, whilst the orange scale was used for cartridges with a weight range of between 9.5 and 15 g, a solution designed to make the correct configuration immediately recognisable.

The Denon DA-305 also offered the option of adjusting the tonearm height (VTA), a feature that allowed the tonearm geometry to be adapted to the various cartridges available on the market at the time. This design flexibility was one of the distinctive features of Denon tonearms intended for the most demanding enthusiasts and professional use.
