Denon DA 309, a 9-inch static-balanced S-shaped tonearm for turntables. Year: 1977. Vintage, collector’s item. Comes with the original signal cable and a copy of the user manual in Japanese, to enhance the historical documentation of the unit.

Description

The Denon DA-309 was a tonearm designed to ensure maximum stability during analogue playback, a testament to the refined Japanese engineering developed by Denon during the golden age of hi-fi. This design stood out for its sophisticated dynamic damping system, engineered to effectively reduce unwanted vibrations, including low-frequency vibrations and those originating from the tonearm’s various components – a particularly important consideration in the context of high-end turntables of the era.

The structure was designed down to the smallest detail: the base of the tonearm tube was divided into two sections, within which a rubber damper with viscoelastic properties calibrated to absorb and dissipate resonances was inserted. This system allowed for more precise tracking and a cleaner sound, highlighting the design attention Denon devoted to mechanical stability and vibration control in its analogue components.

The DA-309 also incorporated a magnetic anti-skating system, which could be completely disabled with a simple adjustment. The adjustment was micrometric, for both anti-skating and tracking force, allowing for an accurate setting consistent with the characteristics of the cartridge used, without adversely affecting the mechanical behaviour of the tonearm. Solutions of this kind were, at the time, a testament to the technical level achieved by Japanese engineering in the field of high-quality tonearms.

Another key feature was the height adjustment, which allowed the tonearm to be adapted to cartridges with heights ranging from 42 to 70 mm. This flexibility made the DA-309 particularly well-suited for use with low-compliance cartridges such as the famous Denon DL-103, for which it had been specifically designed, confirming the design consistency among the analogue components developed by the Japanese manufacturer at that time.

A collector’s item, refurbished and in excellent cosmetic condition.
