Pioneer P D70 – vintage CD player

The Pioneer P-D70 is a rare find and represents one of the Japanese manufacturer’s earliest forays into the field of CD players, marking a pivotal moment when digital technology was taking its first steps in the hi-fi market. A solid and robust machine, designed to complement the amplifiers of the famous Blue Series such as the SA-9800, SA-8800 and SA-7800, it not only shares the same sound philosophy but, above all, the aesthetic elegance and design consistency that made Pioneer one of the iconic brands of the era.

The technical heart of this design was the proprietary VWY061 pick-up, one of the first mechanisms developed by the brand. It was a die-cast unit, built with a robustness reminiscent of the legendary Philips CDM-0 and CDM-1 or the Sony KSS-100. A detail that highlights the pioneering spirit of an era in which reliability was considered an integral part of the design, in stark contrast to many modern mechanisms, which are more fragile and have a limited lifespan.

The digital conversion section utilised the Sony CX20017 converter, the same one found in reference machines such as the Kenwood/Trio DP-1100, the Sony CDP-101 and CDP-501ES, and the Yamaha CD-1a. A choice that confirmed this model’s position amongst high-end products, designed to guarantee cutting-edge performance in the years when the compact disc was first introduced to the world.

The unit also incorporated technical solutions that were advanced for the time, derived directly from Pioneer’s experience in the LaserDisc sector. The Delta-X system with parallel focus mechanism increased sensitivity and precision, whilst the cross-parallel suspension clearly separated the tracking and focusing functions, improving signal stability. Dedicated LSI circuits optimised motor control whilst keeping power consumption low, and multi-stage error correction ensured reliable playback even when the disc was imperfect. The analogue section, shielded by a copper dome and comprising selected components, highlights the attention to detail that characterised high-end designs of that era.
