An entry-level model from Philips that will impress you with its exceptional performance, which is well above average for its price range.
It is a midi-format CD player, meaning its width is reduced to 36 cm. Its strengths lie in its drive mechanism and DAC, which are the cornerstones of good playback and sound quality. As for the chassis, there is room for improvement, which is why it lends itself to various modifications by keen hobbyists.
As mentioned, this player features a highly respectable mechanism: the CDM 4 in its 19-inch version, with a fibreglass cabinet. Other versions of this mechanism were also available, such as die-cast versions designed to withstand professional use and long hours of playback, for example in recording studios or jukeboxes. The laser optics themselves are identical, confirming their high reliability.
As for the conversion stage, this model relied on the TDA 1543, also from Philips, essentially the ‘budget’ version of the more famous TDA 1541A. A 16-bit DAC, therefore, with quadruple oversampling and a digital output filter.
The Philips CD 210 cannot be controlled directly by remote control but offers the option of a wired connection via the rear RCA connectors labelled RC5. This allows for remote control when connected to a Philips, Grundig or Marantz amplifier that uses the same protocol (and therefore features the same orange RCA connectors labelled RC5 on the rear).
The unit on offer has been fully tested and serviced and is in perfect working order. It also plays burned discs. It
is also in excellent cosmetic condition.
