The Philips CD-880 was launched in Belgium in 1989 and represents one of the most mature achievements of Philips engineering during the early heyday of the Compact Disc: a period in which mechanical robustness and the quality of the circuitry were integral to the design, not a compromise. A rare and sought-after model, it stands as the successor to the famous CD-960 and carries forward its ‘no-shortcuts’ approach, taking it to new heights.
From a historical and technical perspective, the CD-880 is interesting because it combines two elements that have become iconic for Philips collectors: the CDM 1 mechanism, evolved into the CDM 1 MKII (with metal components and structural parts, rather than lightweight solutions), and the TDA1541A converter in the selected S1 version, here further identified as Q Selection. In other words, we are looking at a model that represents the pinnacle achieved by Philips with this architecture, before the market shifted towards more economical platforms.
The front panel is dominated by a large display area designed for full control of functions, with advanced management of playback modes and programming. Among its distinctive features is the FTS (Favourite Track Selection) system, one of the most ‘ambitious’ solutions of the era: it allows the storage of favourite selections across numerous discs, with a capacity of up to 1,757 entries (some of which are dedicated to disc identification). There are also functions such as Scan (a preview of the first few seconds of tracks, also useful for programming), Shuffle, multiple repeats and detailed time information management (elapsed and remaining time, per track or total). The panel also features a headphone output with a dedicated amplifier and volume control, with the source impedance set to 150 ohms, a technical choice designed for consistent use with headphones of varying impedance.
On the rear panel, we find a full range of connections for the period: optical and coaxial digital outputs, both fixed and variable analogue line outputs, as well as remote control connectors for integration with other Philips components from the same range. The remote control replicates the main functions of the front panel and also includes dedicated controls for index access and output level adjustment.
The unit on offer has been fully tested and refurbished; it also plays burned CDs. The cosmetic condition is excellent, befitting an item intended for collectors and enthusiasts of the history of Philips digital audio, who are seeking a model that is representative in terms of construction, design and historical significance.
