The Sony PS-2500 represented one of the milestones of Japanese engineering in the field of analogue reproduction. At a time when much of Europe remained wedded to the tradition of belt drive, Japan was already dominating the scene with radically more advanced technical solutions. High-end turntables of the 1970s were by then almost all equipped with direct drive, a symbol of mechanical precision and electronic control of movement: the PS-2500 was a prime example of this.
This professional model employed a servo-controlled direct-drive system, capable of eliminating vibrations and noise transmitted from the motor to the platter, ensuring stable and perfectly constant rotation. The electronic speed control was independent of the mains frequency, and a dedicated sensor monitored the motor’s revolutions to ensure near-absolute precision.
The 1.5 kg die-cast aluminium alloy platter offered excellent moment of inertia, providing a professional-grade flywheel effect. The statically balanced PUA-114 tonearm represented one of the best solutions of the period: it featured lateral balance, adjustable anti-skating and direct tracking force control, ensuring compatibility with high-compliance cartridges and delivering remarkably refined performance.
New dust cover, custom-made by a company specialising in plexiglass work. There are slight signs of wear, but these are perfectly consistent with its age, now approaching half a century.
The turntable comes complete with a shell and a new Audio Technica AT 3600L cartridge, allowing you to test the unit straight away. This can easily be upgraded with your preferred cartridge. Various options are available: we would be delighted to advise you on the ideal cartridge based on your system and budget.
A turntable that masterfully encapsulates Sony’s design philosophy of the era, when precision, solidity and innovation came together to create benchmark instruments built to last.
A collector’s item, in excellent condition and thoroughly refurbished.
