Technics SL-1200: Japanese through and through, a product of that unique era when Japanese engineering was at its peak.
When you say the name “1200”, no further explanation is needed: we are talking about the turntable par excellence, synonymous with Technics itself, the undisputed king of direct-drive. This is the first version, far rarer and harder to come by than the subsequent editions that would go on to populate studios, clubs and collections all over the world.
The model made its debut in 1972 and represented a true revolution. It was built with a compact and sturdy die-cast aluminium cabinet, housing a high-performance direct-drive system. The platter, generously sized and designed to withstand heavy use, reached its rated speed in half a revolution, ensuring minimal rotational irregularity. The dots engraved on the edge of the platter, which over time became a symbol of the SL-1200 series, were already present in this first version. The torque and rotational stability perfectly met the emerging demands of American disco and club culture, allowing for control over musical timing that found an unexpected ally in the adjustable pitch. Thus, almost by coincidence, the first benchmark for DJs was born.
The supplied tonearm, the EPA-120, was a statically balanced S-shaped model of standard length. It allowed for VTA adjustment and was equipped with anti-skating, whilst its removable base offered the possibility of replacements or upgrades, according to the user’s needs.
A collector’s item, in good condition, thoroughly refurbished. A rare piece that marks the beginning of a legend and preserves the historical legacy of one of the most iconic turntables ever made.
