Uncompromisingly vintage, this model is one of the most sought-after Pioneer turntables of its era, a piece that was regarded, even at the time of its launch, as a distillation of advanced technology and cutting-edge design. The design featured a belt-drive system with a Hall-effect brushless motor, a choice that, at the time, marked a clear departure from more conventional systems. The dual chassis, with the platter and tonearm section mounted on separate structures, was a further point of distinction, whilst the spirit level integrated into the platter facilitated precise levelling. The tonearm, equipped with anti-skating and height adjustment, allowed for correct VTA setting in accordance with the most rigorous standards of the period.
The Pioneer PL-61 was presented as a stereo turntable equipped with a brushless DC servo motor based on Hall elements, semiconductors derived from technologies developed in the aerospace sector. It was an extremely slow and stable drive unit, designed to minimise vibration and distortion, considered the two most critical factors in terms of sound quality. The stated wow and flutter figures, below 0.05% WRMS, and the signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 55 dB, demonstrated Pioneer’s focus on mechanical performance and quiet operation. Compared to the traditional DC motors of the time, the brushless Hall motor stood out for its lower generation of electrical or mechanical noise and for its longer operational life, thanks to the absence of parts subject to wear and tear.
As for the model offered here, it has been fully refurbished and is in excellent technical condition. The aesthetics are very well preserved: the original plexiglass dust cover is included with the turntable, the plinth has been cleaned and treated with oil, and the top plate has been carefully polished. A few minor imperfections are to be expected in an item that is over half a century old, but nothing that compromises its collector’s value or historical charm.
