The Thorens TD 160 MKII, fitted with the Isotrack TP 16 MKIII tonearm, was one of the most iconic turntables in the European analogue tradition, a direct evolution of the famous TD 160 and a true masterpiece of vintage audio engineering. Launched in 1976, this model stood out for its high build quality and its refined ability to effectively isolate vibrations thanks to the classic suspended chassis structure that had made the Thorens design school famous. At a time when analogue reproduction was reaching very high levels of technical maturity, the TD 160 MKII perfectly embodied a design philosophy focused on mechanical stability, rotational precision and the reduction of unwanted resonance.
The TP 16 MKIII tonearm represented a significant evolution over previous versions, featuring an even lighter mass of just 7.5 g, a characteristic that made it particularly suitable for use with high-compliance cartridges. This configuration allowed for more precise and delicate tracking of the groove, helping to preserve the record and deliver a particularly refined reproduction. This model featured interchangeable tonearm tubes. This particular unit is fitted with a TP 63 tube (which identified the TP 16 MkIII) but was also compatible with the TP 62 (which identified the TP 16 MkII). The tonearm tubes were identical in structure and differed mainly in the design of the headshell as well as in their overall weight.
One of the most distinctive features of this model is the custom wooden plinth, a solution that not only adds significant aesthetic value but also helped to improve overall performance by further reducing unwanted vibrations. This handcrafted modification enhanced the Thorens suspended chassis and allowed for an even more refined sound, whilst keeping the project’s original design philosophy intact.
Among the most notable technical features was the 16-pole synchronous motor with belt drive, a solution that ensured stable and precise rotation at 33 and 45 rpm. The heavy die-cast aluminium platter contributed to the smoothness of rotation thanks to its mass and its ability to stabilise the system’s motion, whilst the adjustable anti-skating system allowed for correct compensation of lateral forces during groove tracking, maintaining a balanced tracking path.
The Thorens TD 160 MKII, featuring the TP 16 MKIII tonearm and a custom wooden plinth, was therefore a highly sought-after item in the analogue hi-fi world, representing one of the most significant moments in the history of suspended-chassis turntables. The balance between mechanical engineering, build quality and aesthetic elegance made it a genuine collector’s item, appreciated by vinyl enthusiasts and connoisseurs of classic high-fidelity.
This model has been fully refurbished and is in excellent condition. It comes with a new Audio Technica AT 3600L cartridge.
