The Rega Planar 25 was a high-quality analogue turntable manufactured by Rega Research Limited, a British brand that had built its reputation in the hi-fi world precisely through the development of turntables and audio components characterised by a minimalist yet extremely rigorous design approach. Unveiled to mark the company’s 25th anniversary, the Planar 25 arrived at a pivotal moment in the brand’s history and, over the years, became one of the most popular models in the mid-to-high-end market, thanks to its balance of performance, design and price.
The design fully reflected Rega’s manufacturing philosophy, which in those years focused on reducing unnecessary mass and resonance as the preferred means of improving the mechanical stability of analogue playback. The turntable’s plinth utilised a high-density MDF structure with a matt laminate finish and a wooden surround very similar to that used in the more prestigious Rega P9. The minimalist and understated design was a deliberate choice by the British manufacturer and fitted into the tradition of Rega designs, in which apparent simplicity concealed careful research aimed at reducing vibrations and improving the overall stability of the system.
A central element of the design was the platter, made from 12 mm polished float glass. This material was chosen for its excellent rigidity and stability, and for its ability to maintain a constant rotation. Its weight of approximately 2 kg further helped to stabilise the rotating system, minimising speed variations known as wow and flutter and ensuring a uniform rotation.
The Planar 25 was fitted with the renowned RB300 tonearm, one of the most iconic components developed by Rega. Constructed from a single piece of die-cast aluminium, the tonearm stood out for its high structural rigidity combined with a low mass. This design allowed for the minimisation of unwanted resonances and facilitated precise tracking of the groove. The tonearm was also fitted with superior-quality wiring and an improved counterweight, designed to optimise the cartridge’s tracking and maintain correct dynamic balance during the record’s rotation.
The drive system was powered by a low-noise 110 V motor, isolated from the plinth specifically to reduce the transmission of vibrations to the platter. This solution helped to ensure quiet and stable operation, a fundamental element in the design philosophy of Rega turntables of that period.
This model also included a Heed Orbit PPSU external power supply. The use of an external power supply of this type was a design solution highly regarded in the analogue world, as it helped reduce electrical noise and promoted greater motor stability, improving rotational precision.
Great attention had also been paid to the platter’s central bearings, which were manufactured to high precision. Their design aimed to minimise mechanical friction and ensure smooth, even rotation, an essential element for maintaining the stability of analogue playback.
In terms of sound quality, the Rega Planar 25 was often described by the specialist press as a turntable with a dynamic, detailed and neutral character. Its ability to extract subtle details from the vinyl grooves was frequently highlighted in reviews of the time. The RB300 tonearm also ensured excellent compatibility with a wide range of MM (Moving Magnet) and MC (Moving Coil) cartridges, a feature that contributed to its popularity amongst analogue audio enthusiasts.
From an aesthetic and construction point of view, the Planar 25 perfectly embodied Rega’s signature minimalist aesthetic, focused on maximising sound quality without the inclusion of superfluous features. The build was solid and durable, consistent with the British brand’s philosophy of prioritising simple yet meticulously engineered designs.
Over the years, the Planar 25 received numerous accolades from specialist critics and vinyl enthusiasts. On many occasions, it was compared to turntables in higher price brackets, proving competitive both in terms of sound quality and value for money.
The Rega Planar 25 thus represented a significant milestone in the history of the British manufacturer and helped to cement Rega’s reputation in the field of high-quality analogue reproduction. The combination of carefully selected components, precision engineering and a minimalist yet effective design made it a particularly popular model within the British turntable scene.
The unit has been fully refurbished and the model on sale is in excellent cosmetic condition.
