Technics SL 120 MKI – direct-drive turntable

The Technics SL-120, launched in 1972, represented one of the most significant milestones in the history of direct-drive turntables. Developed in Japan during a period when the electronics industry was writing some of the most significant chapters in the history of global hi-fi, this model marked the beginning of a legendary range that would lead to the establishment of the famous SL-1200, the undisputed icon of the category. In that historical context, the technological research of Japanese companies aimed to redefine the standards of rotational stability, mechanical precision and build quality, and the Technics SL-120 fitted perfectly into this scenario as one of the first examples of the practical application of direct-drive technology in the domestic hi-fi sector.

The appeal of the SL-120 lay precisely in its pioneering nature: it was, in fact, the first version, far rarer to come across than the subsequent models that would go on to populate studios and living rooms across the globe. Unlike the 1200, this model was supplied without a tonearm, with a plinth already prepared for the installation of the user’s preferred tonearm, a choice that made it both flexible and unique in the landscape of the time.
