Cabre Duetto, a made-in-Italy integrated stereo amplifier. The name ‘Duetto’ stems from the fact that, in practical terms, it is two components in one. The preamp section is, in fact, electrically isolated from the power amp section, featuring its own transformer and dedicated power supply. The power amp section delivers 50 W per channel (8 ohms) and 70 W per channel (4 ohms).

Description

The DUETTO integrated amplifier was designed to meet the often-overlooked need to ensure the very highest level of quality for all those who, for a variety of reasons, opt for a low-power amplification system: it embodies twenty years of CABRE tradition in multi-chassis amplification systems (with separate preamplifier and power amplifier), from which it inherits the merit of uncompromising build quality and the fidelity of an undisputed tonal quality.

The main limitation of most integrated amplifiers produced today lies in the presence of a single power supply section for both the power and signal components of the amplification chain: this characteristic forces design choices that involve compromises between different requirements, which often result in an overall inability to meet the conflicting needs of high current for the power stages and low noise for the preamplifier stages.

With the DUETTO, CABRE provides a comprehensive solution to problems of this kind, through the adoption of a design scheme that ensures the complete independence of the preamplifier stages from the power stages, an independence that extends from the power supply (through the use of two physically separate transformers) right through to the respective outputs.

It is therefore no exaggeration to say that the DUETTO aims to provide enthusiasts with a product that combines aesthetic appeal with musical perfection: a compact footprint compared to multi-chassis systems, a sober and minimalist design, and unquestionable sound quality are requirements that stem from precise and well-considered technical choices made during the design phase.

The output stage, with its entirely complementary circuitry from input to output and low levels of both local and overall negative feedback, embodies all the best characteristics of CABRE’s twenty-year tradition. The biasing of the power transistors is optimised to maximise their speed, linearity and current delivery, with particular attention paid to limiting the generation of even-order harmonics during ‘clipping’ when power supply limits are reached.

As for the preamplifier section, a simple and essential circuit layout allows the DUETTO to ensure high input acceptance, low overall distortion, very low noise and excellent dynamic performance: this result depends heavily on the choice of semiconductors characterised by an extremely low noise figure and high linearity across their wide frequency response range. Particular attention has been paid to the input selector, which features a dual-section switch with gold-plated contacts, and to the volume and balance control potentiometers, which offer excellent quality and electrical characteristics.

All the features highlighted so far have been put into practice through almost two years of experimentation, during which a layout was refined that places all components on a single printed circuit board (with 70-micron-thick traces).

Functionally tested, serviced and in working order. In excellent cosmetic condition.
