Description

The Teac V-5000 was a particularly attractive option in the mid-range cassette recorder market, as it combined high-end technical specifications with a design approach typically found in more ambitious models. The machine was based on a robust dual-capstan system, three separate heads and Dolby B and Dolby C noise reduction systems, supported by the extended headroom provided by Dolby HX Pro. Teac also integrated into this platform a particularly precise system for optimising tape bias and sensitivity, as well as a fifteen-step playback search function, features which at the time made the V-5000 a technically advanced product.

The recorder’s mechanics employed four DC motors dedicated to different functions: the capstans, used to minimise wow and flutter, were driven by a servo motor; a second motor drove the drive wheels; a third managed the movements of the head assembly and pressure rollers; a fourth controlled the opening and closing of the cassette compartment. The decision to physically separate the recording head from the erasing head, albeit within a single unit, allowed for a direct comparison between the source and the recorded signal, a solution typical of quality-oriented machines.

Teac equipped the model with a spring-loaded stabilising platform fixed to the rear of the compartment door, designed to absorb any mechanical vibrations transmitted to the tape through the cassette shell. The deck incorporated sensors for automatic tape type recognition, so as to adjust equalisation and bias, and included a fluorescent orange tab that allowed the amount of tape on each spool to be assessed, albeit with slightly limited visibility. The door was also removable to facilitate cleaning and demagnetisation.

Signal level management was handled by two sixteen-segment fluorescent indicators calibrated from –40 to +10 dB, with the 0 dB mark positioned according to the IEC standard at 250 nanoweber per metre, thus providing a reliable reference during recording calibration. The four-digit electronic counter displayed the elapsed tape time in minutes and seconds, with the option to select the cassette length from four options. The RTZ function allowed for a quick return to zero, whilst programmed search enabled rapid skipping to the various recorded selections. The stop button automatically inserted the necessary gaps between tracks.

The tape calibration system, based on test tones at 410 Hz for level and 8,750 Hz for bias, made it possible to optimise the settings extremely quickly, taking less than twenty seconds for the entire procedure, during which the output was muted. Once calibration was complete, it was simply a matter of rewinding to the start point to erase the test tones.

The recording level control was designed as an attenuator, with a scale ranging from 0 dB to infinity, following a setting logic borrowed from the professional world, and included a balance control for the two channels. On the front panel there was a headphone output with a dedicated control, whilst the output level at the line sockets remained fixed. In addition to the usual inputs, the model featured a selectable CD Direct input for connections from Teac players of the same era.

Noise reduction was managed via a three-position selector for Dolby Off, Dolby B and Dolby C. Dolby HX Pro, as per the design, remained active at all times. The FM multiplex filter could be switched off to maintain an extended frequency response, except when recording FM stereo broadcasts. It also featured a timer switch and controls for duplication from compatible Teac CD players.

An internal analysis of the V-5000 revealed above-average build quality, with particular attention paid to component layout and shielding. Several front-panel controls were operated via extension shafts, allowing the corresponding circuits to be positioned in protected areas of the unit, away from potential interference and hum fields.
