The CT-939 has been recognised as one of Pioneer’s finest decks thanks to its carefully selected audio components and build quality. It is the European counterpart to the original Japanese T 818 or its American sibling, the CT S800 (Pioneer often used different model codes to distinguish its products across various markets).
It is a stereo cassette recorder featuring Dolby B/C and HX-Pro noise reduction, and its main features include: 3 heads and off-tape monitoring, a 4-digit linear digital tape counter, automatic tape type selection, support for standard, chrome and metal tapes, and a dual-capstan drive with belt transmission.
The front-loading mechanism is motorised, and the cassette must be inserted with the playback side facing forwards into the cassette compartment. The level meters used on the CT-939 are generic digital peak-reading meters with peak hold for easy adjustment of the optimum recording level. The fully logical transport controls respond to the slightest touch of the fingers for quick and easy selection of the transport function. To ensure the best response from the wide variety of tapes available, bias and sensitivity can be adjusted to optimal levels prior to recording.
The Dolby C type used in the CT-939 provides 20 dB of noise reduction above approximately 1,000 Hz, effectively doubling the amount provided by the B type. The Dolby HX PRO system features precise bias control during recording to reduce distortion and improve linearity in the high-frequency range: the result is a recorded sound that is highly faithful to the original. The 19 kHz multiplex pilot signal present in FM stereo broadcasts can cause false alarms in the noise reduction system. The switchable MPX filter filters out the pilot signal and ensures correct Dolby processing of FM stereo programmes. Connection to other audio components for playback can be made via an RCA cable, and recording from a source via an RCA cable.
